Thesis title:

Bertie on Screen: An inquiry into the Bertrand Russell Archives and their screen adaptation potential for the East Asian market

This project is an exploration of the Bertrand Russell Archives with the aim of identifying stories with contemporary and international audience appeal. Focusing on the marketability of the Nobel Prize-winning author’s philosophy in East Asian countries, these stories will be developed into a biopic screenplay.

This project lies between academia and industry, scholarship and practice. Backed by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation, my goal is for this film to bridge the gap between the European and Chinese film market, uniting us via Russell’s pacifist beliefs – his story is an inspiring and motivational one which could come at no better time, given current political tensions. Through this research I am constantly engaging critically with ideas of power, diplomacy, and cultural exchange, examining how they shape the narratives that reach audiences and the infrastructures that support them.

The project is a pioneering opportunity to revive Russell’s philosophies across cultural, economic, political and generational differences, thereby paving the way for further transnational collaboration.
