Thesis title:
From Local Voices to National and Global Climate Action: a consideration of what we learn from Theatrical Intervention in Waste Management in Anyigba, Kogi State, Nigeria
This project explores how theatre practice can address poor waste management through an approach that centres local voices, and catalyses behavioural and systemic change. Rooted in Anyigba, Nigeria, where waste management remains a growing concern and there is an ongoing need to strengthen community engagement, this project aims to co-create community-based theatre practices through which wider socio-political concerns influencing how waste is understood and managed are examined. The research will provide insights into how theatre and performance offer inclusive methods founded in local knowledge and practices, and how culturally specific practices can be developed to address similar challenges elsewhere. The project further iterates critical questions on the ethics and nature of theatre-based approaches to culturally sustainable development, especially in the aspects of waste management and broader environmental, ecological and climate issues in cross-cultural and transnational terms.
