Thesis title:

Examining the Experiences and Worldviews of Women Who Engage With Femcel Online Spaces

Femcels (short for female involuntary celibates) are women who cannot find a sexual or romantic partner for reasons that they believe are beyond their control. ‘Femcel’ originates from the term incel, which is largely associated with the manosphere. The manosphere has been linked to a rise in extremist views amongst boys and men online, with dangerous real-world implications for the lives of women (Ging, 2019). The meaning of femcel has shifted online since its origins on Reddit in 2018, the term is now often used ironically or to describe a ‘sad girl’ internet aesthetic (Johanssen and Kay, 2024). This thesis explores these changes in femcel content online, examining the visual and textual content produced across Reddit and Tumblr. By applying a critical discourse analysis grounded in postfeminist theory, this project offers new insights into the ways young women navigate femininity in contemporary digital spaces.
